One of the reasons self-diagnosing children can be misleading is because what you see isnโt always whatโs going on.

Children, especially those who are neurodivergent or experiencing emotional distress, often mask their true feelings or behaviours to fit in socially. This is especially common in:
๐๐ฎ๐ญ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ซ๐๐ง, who may suppress stimming (self stimulatory) behaviours.
๐๐ง๐ฑ๐ข๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ซ๐๐ง, who might avoid raising their hands or freeze during group work.
๐๐ซ๐๐ฎ๐ฆ๐๐ญ๐ข๐ฌ๐๐ ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ซ๐๐ง, who often shut down or people-please to avoid conflict
๐๐ก๐ ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ? Adults may completely miss signs of distress because the child seems ๐๐๐๐ on the surface.

Masking is exhausting. Many children who mask during the school day,
meltdown at home (after-school restraint collapse) and parents feel overwhelmed and frustrated by this behaviour.

A psychologist, counsellor, or trained special educator can:
๐ฅธ Observe subtle signs across settings (school, home & play)
๐ฅธ Conduct essential child-friendly assessments
๐ฅธ Involve parents and teachers in supporting the child
Only with this kind of an understanding can we move from surface behaviours to root causes, and provide support that really helps.
